The Difference Between a Personality & a Corporeity

The Personhood of the Holy Spirit

"Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.  He shall glorify Me: for He shall receive of Mine, and shall shew it unto you.” (John 16:13-14)

Notice how Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as “He” or “Himself” nine times in these two verses of Scripture.

This is because the Holy Spirit is a Person and not just a Power to grab hold of.

Every Born Again person needs to become acquainted with the Holy Spirit as a Person if they desire to see His manifestations in their lives.

The Difference Between a Personality & a Corporeity

Some have asked, “Well, how can you be a person and a spirit at the same time?”

Easy.

First, you must understand the difference between a personality and a corporeity.

You do not need a physical body to be a personality.  Angels and demons have no physical bodies.  They have spiritual bodies.  Nonetheless, they are personalities.

To be a corporeity means to be a spirit personality living within a physical body.  A human being is a corporeity.

It is not necessary to have a physical body to be a person.  God, angels and demons do not possess physical bodies, but they are all personalities.  Each one of them possesses all the attributes of personhood; a mind, a will, intellect and emotions.  Therefore, they are persons.  They do not qualify for corporeity status, granted, but they are still persons living in spiritual bodies.  The same is true of the Holy Spirit.

The Personhood of the Holy Spirit

Check out the following facts in your own Bible.  You will become convinced of the Holy Spirit's Personhood.

The Holy Spirit has His own mind.

"And He that searcheth the heart knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because He maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God." (Romans 8:27)

The Holy Spirit has His own will.

"But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will." (1 Corinthians 12:11)

The Holy Spirit has feelings and very real emotions.

"In all their affliction He was afflicted, and the angel of His presence saved them: in His love and in His pity He redeemed them; and He bare them and carried them all the days of old. But they rebelled and vexed His Holy Spirit ..." (Isaiah 63:9,10)

"Now I beseech you brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me." (Romans 15:30)

"And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption." (Ephesians 4:30)

The Holy Spirit possesses super intellect, knowing all there is to know even about Almighty God Himself.

"But God hath revealed them unto us by His Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." (1Corinthians 2:10-11)

The Holy Spirit knows supernaturally when someone in the world releases faith in God’s Word.  He responds by performing miracles and healings

"For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, through mighty signs and wonders by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem and roundabout unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the Gospel of Christ." (Romans 15:18-19)

The Holy Spirit has His own voice.  He uses it to speak to humanity on God’s behalf.

"As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate Me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them." (Acts 13:2)

"He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit sayeth unto the Churches... He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit sayeth unto the Churches...  He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit sayeth unto the Churches... He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit sayeth unto the Churches." (Revelation 2:7,11,17,29)

In our opening verses, Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would guide us, talk to us and even show us some future events. But it is important to keep in mind that the Holy Spirit will never speak contrary to the written Word of God, God the Father or God the Son.

"...for He shall not speak of Himself: but whatsoever He shall hear that shall He speak and He will show you things to come." (John 16:13)

Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Teacher.  Jesus also said that the Holy Spirit is still in business today to glorify Him.

"But when the Comforter is come, Whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of Me." (John 15:26)

The Holy Spirit can be lied to as we see in the case of Ananias and Sapphira. (Acts 5:1-11)

The Holy Spirit can be resisted.

"Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye." (Acts 7:51)

The Holy Spirit can be quenched.

"Quench not the Spirit." (1Thessalonians 5:19)

The Holy Spirit can also be cursed and slandered.

"Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men." (Matthew 12:32)

"Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden underfoot the Son of God, and hath counted the Blood of the Covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of Grace?" (Hebrews 10:29)

Of course, it is a very bad idea to lie to, resist, quench, curse and slander the Holy Spirit.  However, the fact that these things can occur do indeed prove that the Holy Spirit is a Person, not a wispy impersonal force or power mindlessly floating around in Space.

Hook up, respectfully, with the Person of the Holy Spirit.  With His help, you will crack a home run in life, prayer and Ministry every time.  When He is praying through you, your prayers will never go unanswered.

"Likewise the Holy Spirit helps our inability to pray the way we should. For we do not always know how to pray as we should. Therefore, the Holy Spirit makes intercession through us in other Tongues." (Romans 8:26)

The Holy Spirit is the only One Who can get you on track and keep you in the will of God for your life.

Say, “Jesus, I choose You as my Savior," if you have not done so already. This will qualify  you to become a vessel for the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence.

Once you have been Born Again, you qualify to pray, "Holy Spirit, come and dwell within me. I choose You as my Comforter, Teacher, Empowerer and Intercessor, in Jesus' Name.”

Jesus Christ is the greatest Gift God ever gave to the world.  However, the Holy Spirit is the greatest Gift God has ever given to the Body of Christ.

Jesus Christ was completely dependent upon the Person of the Holy Spirit.  All Born Again Believers in Jesus Christ are equally as dependent upon the Person of the Holy Spirit.

"Following the leading of the Holy Spirit always leads to success." Dr. Kenneth E. Hagin

Jesus Was Conceived by the Holy Spirit
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost

"21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.” (Matthew 1:18-25)

The Scripture declares that Jesus Christ was not conceived the way a natural baby is conceived, whereby a man and a woman come together to conceive a child. The Bible says Jesus Christ was conceived supernaturally by the work of the Holy Spirit. One denomination calls it the “Immaculate Conception.” I like that.
When Jesus was conceived it was not the conception of a human personality. It was the conception of a human nature. Jesus had already existed as a personality at the time of His human conception. He was not a brand-new creation that never existed before. Jesus had always existed from Eternity past. But now He was to enter into a new relationship with human nature. By an act of the Holy Spirit of God, Jesus legally entered into the realm of humanity thru the natural door of a woman’s womb. By the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit He became as human as you and me in order to personally pay the price for the sins of humanity.
“But (Jesus) made Himself of no reputation and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” (Philippians 2:7-8)
Jesus changed from Divine form to human form. He temporarily gave up His former glory and became totally dependant upon the Person of the Holy Spirit.

"Behold My Servant, Whom I uphold... I have put My Spirit upon Him." (Isaiah 42:1)

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me; because the Lord hath anointed Me to preach Good News unto the meek..." (Isaiah 61:1)

Jesus actually “stripped Himself of Deity,” one translation of the Bible says. Another translation says He “ditched His Godness” and actually became as human as you and me in order to execute God’s supernatural Plan of Redemption. He did this by the power of the Holy Spirit, as we shall see.

Jesus Was Sent to the Earth by the Holy Spirit
“Come ye near unto Me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I. And now the Lord God, and His Spirit hath sent Me. 17 Thus saith the Lord thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” (Isaiah 48:16-17)
We have already seen that Jesus was conceived in the womb of a virgin by the Holy Spirit. But the following is amazing: Above Jesus Himself prophesies ahead of time that it would be the Holy Spirit Who would actually “send” Him or “commission” Him to come to Planet Earth. “Sent” is actually “to sow towards a harvest.” Jesus came willingly but the Holy Spirit commissioned Him on this holy errand.

Jesus’ Human Growth Is Attributed to the Holy Spirit
Jesus’ physical, intellectual and spiritual growth was supernaturally overseen by the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit.
“And the child grew (progressively in spirit, soul and body) and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon Him.” (Luke 2:40)
Jesus was not created a full-grown human adult like Adam even though He was called “The Second Adam.” (1 Corinthians 15:45) He started as an embryo, then a fetus and a baby, then a child, a teenager and right through adulthood, just like we do, except He did not possess any of our shortcomings. From the time He was able to learn, the Holy Spirit was imparting wisdom to Him and God’s grace was upon Him. He was not born “all-knowing.” (Isaiah 7:14-16) He was taught by the Holy Spirit to the utmost extent. He increased intellectually so supernaturally that when He was 12 years old He was privately teaching the Teachers in the Temple by the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. (Luke 2:46-52)
The Bible says that Jesus had more understanding than all of His Teachers and that He understood more than all the ancient Sages before Him. (Psalm 119:97-104) Why was this true? Because every day the Holy Spirit was right there infusing Him supernaturally with knowledge of Scripture. When all the other children were just learning how to spell, Jesus was memorizing whole sections of Scripture with the help of the Holy Spirit.
When Finis Jennings Dake, the author of the Dake's Reference Bible, was 18 years old a dove descended upon him. It was the Holy Spirit visiting him. At that moment in time 2000 verses of Scripture were instantly imparted to his memory bank. From that day forward he flawlessly quoted entire chapters and books of the Bible from the pulpit as a sign, wonder and miracle. But Brother Dake could not put a dent in Jesus knowledge and handling of the Scriptures because of what the Holy Spirit did for Him.  The Holy Spirit did not just visit Jesus one time, as was the case with Brother Dake.  The Holy Spirit visited Jesus every morning of His young life, personally teaching Jesus the Scriptures.
“The Lord God hath given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary. He wakeneth morning by morning, He wakeneth Mine ear to hear as the learned.” (Isaiah 50:4)
Jesus had the Spirit within from the womb as John the Baptist did. (Luke 1:15)  From the time He could read, the Holy Spirit would teach Him morning by morning.  When His mother Mary would come in at 5:30 a.m. to wake up her other children, no doubt little Jesus had already been burning the early morning oil for two or three hours during Holy Spirit led Prophet School. Mary would witness this year after year.
“And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the Spirit of the Lord (Holy Spirit) shall rest upon Him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.” (Isaiah 11:1-2)
Jesus was perfect and complete in His Deity, but His humanity developed just like yours and mine by the power of the Holy Spirit. He had no Internet or text books. Possibly just a few parchments and what we refer to as "the Old Testament" in parchment. It was just Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Sacred Scriptures.

There is an 18 year section of Jesus’ life missing between 12 and 30 years of age. Where do you think He was? And what do you think He was doing? Well, imagine 24 years of what happened to Finis Jennings Dake in 3 minutes happening over and over and over for Jesus during 2½ decades. Astounding. The Holy Spirit is astounding. This happened between Jesus and the Holy Spirit morning by morning by morning. No small wonder Jesus had supernatural knowledge and supernatural recall of the Sacred Word of God.

Jesus Was Anointed with Holy Spirit Power at Age 30
“And Jesus when He was baptized went up straightway out of the water and, lo, the Heavens were opened unto Him and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon Him. 17 And lo, a voice from Heaven saying, This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:16-17)
This particular bestowal of the Holy Spirit’s anointing upon Jesus was for the purpose of officially equipping Him for His supernatural public Ministry. Before this there is nowhere in the Bible where Jesus taught publicly, healed, cast out demons publicly, performed miracles, etc. It was only after His River Jordan, Holy Spirit Baptism experience that Jesus stood up and publicly declared that the Holy Spirit was now not only within Him but upon Him.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He’s anointed Me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He hath sent Me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.” (Luke 4:18)
Was Jesus God at 2 years old? Was He God at 5, 15, 25 and 29 years old? Unequivocally "Yes."  So, why didn’t He perform any miracles until this point? After His Holy Spirit Baptism He performed the water into wine miracle and the Bible says, “This was the beginning of His miracles.” (John 2:11) Jesus never performed a miracle up until this time because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon Him to do so. His miracle Ministry began only once the Holy Spirit came upon Him to perform the miraculous. It was the Father, via the agency of the Holy Spirit upon Him, Who performed every miracle through Jesus Christ.

"...but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works." (John 14:10)

Thirteen times in the Old Testament, when someone had a supernatural work to do, the Word says, “The Spirit of the Lord came upon them.” It is customary to believe that Jesus’ great works were the result of some inherent greatness because He was the Son of God. But Jesus says otherwise. He said it was because the anointing of “the Spirit has come upon Me.” Are you seeing this? Jesus was sent by the Holy Spirit, conceived by the Holy Spirit, personally taught by the Holy Spirit and anointed for supernatural Ministry by the Holy Spirit. Jesus Himself said that He could do nothing by Himself.

"I can of Mine own self do nothing..." (John 5:30)

Jesus Ministered Supernaturally by Holy Spirit Power
“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: Who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed of the devil; for God was with Him (by the agency of the Holy Spirit).” (Acts 10:38)
This is one of the clearest verses in all of Scripture. It was the Holy Spirit Who gave Jesus supernatural power to heal the sick and cast out demons. As a matter of fact, Jesus got even more specific in Matthew 12 about the Holy Spirit enabling Him to cast out demons. He cast one out of a blind/dumb man and the Pharisees accused Him of casting that spirit out by the power of Satan. Listen to Jesus' Spirit-inspired rebuke.
“And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; but how then shall his kingdom stand? 27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? (Some Pharisees practice exorcisms.) Therefore, they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God is come unto you.” (Matthew 12:26-28)
Here Jesus makes very clear the foolishness of Satan casting himself out. He also makes very clear His source of power for this type of Ministry – the Holy Spirit. The doctrine of demonology is one of the clearest in all of Scripture. Jesus spent one quarter of His 3½ year Ministry casting out unclean spirits and teaching us, His disciples, how to do so. Yet most Believers run from this type of Holy Spirit empowered Ministry. They run because they wrongly believe "I could never cast a demon out of someone."  They do not realize that Jesus said it is the Holy Spirit within Who casts out unclean spirits.
Everything Jesus did in this life, He did by the power of the Holy Spirit. He was always the first one to say so. He was sent, He was conceived, He grew, He ministered, healed and cast out unclean spirits by the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus literally lived His life with the help and by the power of the Person of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Died by the Power of the Holy Spirit
It was not enough that Jesus simply suffer and die for the sins of humanity. He had to do it with the proper attitude. If Jesus died grudgingly, hatefully or resentfully, God would not accept His sacrifice. Jesus had to die willingly, lovingly and respectfully and once again it was the Holy Spirit Who made it possible for Jesus to do so.
“For if the blood of bulls and of goats and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: 14 how much more shall the Blood of Christ Who through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the Living God?” (Hebrews 9:13-14)
“Without spot” is actually “faultlessly.” Yes, Jesus went to the Cross willingly and even said so.

“I delight to do Thy will, oh God.” (Psalm 40:8)

“I came down from Heaven not to do Mine own will but to do the will of Him Who sent Me.” (John 6:38)

“Therefore doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I may take it again. 18 No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father.” (John 10:17-18)
“Power” is actually “Holy Spirit power” or “super human potentate.” “Commandment” is actually “authoritative prescription.”

God, the Great Physician, wrote out a prescription for the Earth’s ills and gave it to Jesus saying, “Here, run this down to Earth for Me, fill it, ful-fill it and then come on back up here to Me. It’s the cure for sin.”

Jesus said, “Willingly, Sir. Let’s go, Holy Spirit, You are My Enabler/Helper.”

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I've said to you." (John 14:26)

The power Jesus had to lay His life down and take it up again, He Himself said was the power of the Eternal Spirit, His and our Helper.

The word "Helper" is actually "paraclete."  It means "One who comes alongside to help."

Jesus lived and died by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Helper.

But let’s not overlook the following.

Jesus Rose & Lives Again by the Power of the Holy Spirit
“But if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.” (Romans 8:11)
If Jesus needed the supernatural power of the agency of the Holy Spirit to come here, live here, learn here, teach here, preach here, heal here, cast out demons here, die here and live here again, then it could only be true that we need the Holy Spirit equally as much.

All Believers
Need the Power of the Holy Spirit
All Believers need the power of the Holy Spirit to live, teach, preach, heal, cast out spirits, go through all the phases of our lives, to die and live again.
It is one thing to have Jesus the Savior living in you, but it is another experience altogether to have the power Jesus had living in Him living in you. Jesus longs to give you that Person and power so you can perform greater works.

"Verily, verily I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father." (John 14:12)

When Jesus said "because I go unto My Father," He was referring to sending the Holy Spirit back to His Body on Earth, enabling them to do the works of Jesus.

"But ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you..." (Acts 1:8)

When John the Baptist was preaching in the wilderness he told the Pharisees and the Sadducees something interesting.

“I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance; but He that cometh after me is mightier than I, Whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire.” (Matthew 3:11)
The Pharisees and Sadducees despised Jesus and were constantly looking for ways to eliminate Him. Yet He remained continually willing to fill them with Holy Spirit power. How much more willing is He to fill us with His power because we love Him?
“As every man hath received the gift (Holy Spirit), even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1 Peter 4:10)
The “gift” referred to here is the Holy Spirit Baptism. If you are Born Again and have not yet received the Holy Spirit Baptism, simply ask and God will fill you with the Holy Spirit, enabling you to live a life of power with God.

"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst let him come unto Me, and drink. He that believeth on Me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified. Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying said, Of a truth this is the Prophet." (John 7:37-40)

Possibly you already have the Holy Spirit’s power dwelling within and upon you and you just need some fresh fire and anointing. Ask and you shall receive.

“But my horn (power) shalt thou exalt (increase) like the horn of an unicorn: I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” (Psalm 92:10)
Having now studied this Biblical message I’m sure you can better understand why Jesus said, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter (Holy Spirit) will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.” (John 16:7)
If Jesus said it was more important for Him to leave so the Holy Spirit could come back to us from Him, it must be pretty vital that we receive the Person and the power Holy Spirit. Did you get that? Jesus said it was even more important that we receive Holy Spirit power than it was for Him to stay here.
Jesus’ power came directly from the Person of the Holy Spirit. It did not come by natural attributes solely because He was the Son of God. Jesus repeatedly said, “I can do nothing by Myself.” referring to His need for the Person of the Holy Spirit. (John 5:20)
I would like to put that in modern day terms for you.  Jesus, looking back at all He accomplished during His 3 1/2 year Earth Ministry, would say to the Holy Spirit today, “Thanks. I couldn’t have done it without You.”

As Believers in Jesus Christ, we will never accomplish the perfect will of God for our lives and Ministries without the help of the Person of the Holy Spirit.

Note: The Holy Spirit also led Jesus into and through His wilderness testing.

“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted (tested) of the devil.” (Matthew 4:1)
The Holy Spirit also wants to leads us through our testings and trials here on Earth.  He will speak to us on behalf of God the Father and God the Son. He will even show us things that lie before us in order that we may prepare for them. Talk to the Holy Spirit. Worship the Holy Spirit. Love the Holy Spirit. Trust the Holy Spirit. Be led by the Holy Spirit

Develop a relationship with the Holy Spirit. Jesus did and Jesus is our Example in all things.

"Howbeit, when He the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come." (John 16:13)
